FMF? Are you serious? A whole journey...or at least the beginning
I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT I AM DOING!!!!! I think that's what makes this journey so appealing and rewarding for me. When I started seeing these posts and recipes and discussions on social media about "FMF", my first thought was "Oh my gosh! That's a bad word!!!" But turns out, FMF is FRESHLY MILLED FLOUR or that's my definition of it. I was so intimidated about this new way of doing things that I just lurked in the groups on social media. My husband said we could buy one of these mills. Our friends bought a brand new one and I was so excited for them. But one at my house? That would mean I would have to use it.
And did I say I didn't know what I was doing?! I was so overwhelmed with the acronyms people were using. HRW, FMF, SRW. And kamut and spelt and autolyse and hard wheat and soft wheat. I just wanted to feed my family healthy foods. I saw the stories and the research and knew that we were on the right path for our family. But I just didn't know how I was going to get there. Sigh...
And then, something happened. My husband called me one day out of the blue so excited he could barely speak. Someone was GIVING him a grain mill. When he told me, I said "a REAL one?" You have to know my husband. He does not know a stranger! He started talking to someone in the grocery store and next thing he knows, she's offering him her old grain mill. He picked it up a few days later.
I was so excited! But SO nervous! I am a good baker. I'll say it. But this had me SO nervous. I started with bread because that's where you are supposed to start, right? But it wasn't going the best for me. So I decided to PIVOT. How could I get FMF into our diet without making myself a nervous wreck and now feel defeated before I even got started? So I decided I would start with "easy" things. I started with Blueberry Muffins and they were absolutely heavenly! (See my next post for the recipe).
So, after making TWO successful items, I feel like I have conquered the world! Well, at least grain in my kitchen for two recipes! (The other recipe was homemade cheese crackers!)
I have learned a couple of things. 1). My mill is LOUD! I have to warn the feral toddler before I turn it on so she doesn't have a whole melt down. 2). It's best to hang a towel behind the mill to catch the 'dust'. 3). Baking is supposed to be fun, so don't let it intimidate you so much. JUST DO IT!!
